Newton Police Chief Shot--Not Seriously Injured

Newton Police Chief Will Jackson was shot twice in the back Saturday morning while assisting with an eviction. He was wearing a ballistic vest and was not seriously hurt. The incident happened in the Call area between Highway 96 and 87 as officers were attempting to serve an eviction notice. A man and woman in the home opened fire on constables and officers, but finally surrendered and are in custody facing charges of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant. Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby helped negotiate the surrender of the couple.
