Appeal Denied For Man Serving 50 Years

A man serving a 50 year prison sentenced for attempted capital murder of a peace officer will remain

behind bars. The 9th Court of Appeals denied an appeal for Joshua Michael Sykes, who wasconvicted

and sentenced for firing shots at Orange County deputies during an incident in 2020 near Mauriceville.

Sykes claimed he should have been tried for aggravated assault, not attempted capital murder. The

appeals court disagreed.
