And then Bud Adams. The Icon of the American Football League passes on, days after his coach
Bum Phillips left us. Both made their mark in pro football.
Bum, the likeable coach, analyst and all around good guy from East Texas.
Bud, the much maligned owner of the Oilers, later the Tennessee Titans.
“Bud gave us the Oilers, then took them away” chanted Houston fans.
But he did much more than that. He helped take a fledgling league and turned it into a winner.
Do you remember the New York Titans, or the Los Angeles Chargers, or the Boston Patriots or the Dallas Texans?
You know them now as NY Jets, San Diego Chargers, New England’s Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs.
But that’s the way they were. Fighting for recognition against the NFL. It took only four years.
In 1966 Green Bay defeated KC in the first super bowl 35-10, but the die was cast.
Struggling on ABC with black and white television, the AFL survived and made the NFL stronger.
Today, we seldom realize the difference, but Bud along with Lamar Hunt and Harry Wismer, made the league a reality.
Bud brought the game to Houston and though they have never seen a Super Bowl as either the Oilers or Texans, they are here.
He was also one of the architect’s of the Astrodome, (the eighth wonder of the world….remember?)
Bud and Bum, two great success stories.
Are you kidding me? Guess not. Some off the wall group has begged Katy Perry not to endorse “Pepsi”.
How many actors, singers, celebrities etc. have endorsed product over the years?
Answer: A lot.
I may not be the biggest KP fan around, but she is attractive, is talented and fit for the soft drink ad.
Can you imagine the lawsuits that would be filed if celeb’s or that matter if anyone were kept from endorsing a product?
Answer: A lot.
Let’s see MJ did Coke…..or was it Pepsi.
Another MJ is doing Hanes.
Pretzels and beer and anything….dear are marketed successfully by celebs.
Katy will not be telling kids to drink 8 Pepsi’s a day.
She just wants them to choose Pepsi over other product.
It’s as old as time itself.
Then Pepsi counters with “we are not marketing to 12 year old kids”.
Pepsi just needs to stand their ground and tell these Yahoo’s to buzz off.
Next PETA will be asking Geico to drop the Geckel. Or is it Geckle?
We really shouldn’t be surprised that out of almost 10 million who tried, only 36,000 got on.
I am talking about the feeble excuses given by our government as to the “glitch” in logging on to the ACA.
Shouldn’t we have known that using 10 year old technology could have put a hole in the balloon?
Were we even mildly surprised to find that it takes over an hour to get anywhere on the page?
Did we not pay hundreds of dollars for screwdrivers and thousands for toilets 20 years ago?
(That one was an expose of 60 minutes showing the inability to function by the USG in 1993.)
So I am not surprised when I see the dollar drop in value because of excessive borrowing.
I do not lift an eyebrow when I note the “My way or the highway attitude” of the president.
What the republican party better do is “huddle”.
You know….huddle. Like a football team on the field making up a play.
The Tea Party and the others on the right side better get a game plan or they will get blown out again in 2016.
The Democrats are playing all of the right cards and the media is following in lock step.
Don’t believe that?
Hide and watch!!
There are bullies out there. Make no mistake.
We have all watched the “Christmas Story” where Ralphie takes on the bully and bloodies his nose.
That would be nice if true all the time. Problem is….it doesn’t work that way very often.
The case in Florida where two (and up to 15 girls)bullied Rebecca Sedwick.
Rebecca committed suicide back in September. She was 12. That makes it even worse.
Bing bullied by older girls, one notably being jealous because Rebecca used to date her now boyfriend.
Despite a very lurid message on Face Book in which one of the girls admits taunting but is not sorry,
Parents of the accused say her FB site was hacked, and they feel sorry it happened.
The sheriff of Polk county isn’t so sure.
Whatever the outcome there will be no jail time. Of that you can be assured.
The real problem?
We, as a society are looking the other way. I think we all need to take stock of what our kids are doing.
AT ALL TIMES!!!
The common thread in all of this seems to be “My kids are good kids”.
“My kids wouldn’t do this”.
That seems to be the problem with many of our students in the classroom, too.
When you know your parents “have your back” you get a little cockier. Correct?
The sheriff in Polk county said it best.
“The suspect’s parents don’t think there is a problem.
And that is the problem”.
Just in case you missed it, it’s still a holiday. I am talking about Columbus day.
I know, I know. The Indians gave Chris tobacco and he and his staff gave them the clap.
I don’t know which has killed more. I have smoked but……well you get the point.
As much as we have brutalized his off course visit that discovered our country, he is still a hero.
Some of us still know he put the touch on the Queen of Spain for a loan so he could find the new world.
Many of us know the names of the ships that sailed the blue in ’92.
(Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria.)
Progressives will tell you it was an ill fated trip.
I wonder if these denizens of literature realize where they would have been born if he had not sailed.
For many there would be no government assistance, no free lunch and certainly no holiday.
If they had not been born here (those denizens of literature) they would have to enter this country illegally.
AND WE ALL KNOW THAT IS NOT THE RIGHT THING TO DO.
The kid who flew to Vegas, without a ticket.
The kid who went through security unnoticed.
The kid, nine years old……is pretty smart.
We find now the kid was thrown out of school for fighting.
The kid stole a van and crashed it.
The kid was taking out the garbage and jumped on the light rail and beat it to the airport.
The kid’s father says “he has problems”.
The kid’s father says they have reached out for help because they don’t know what to do.
I guess….I guess…the kid’s father might be the one who needs help.
As a father, the rules should be laid out.
I wonder if he has ever heard of punishment.
Not necessarily a whipping….but punishment.
I know what would have been waiting for me when I got back home if I had done that.
What would have your father done if you had done that?
Have we gotten to the point where parents know nothing about parenting?
Do many parents who are……need to go to parent school?
Anyway. The kid is smart….smarter than his old man.
If you missed the Elizabeth Smart interview, you missed a good one.
Now 25, she of course, was kidnapped from her home in Utah.
When she reluctantly told police she was indeed the missing 14 year old,
Salt Lake police were skeptical. Why would this young woman, held as a sex object and slave not run away?
Fear. Fear for her life and the life of her family. There have been other cases.
Patty Hearst, the millionaires daughter, the three young girls in Ohio and many more.
Unless you have been there you cannot imagine what any of these girls or women went through.
Yet, we as a nation are skeptical.
We sometimes choose to believe the worst in people, instead of the best.
Sometimes our judgment is clouded by what we perceive to be trickery.
There are probably far more good people in this world, than bad.
At least I hope so. I hope for any other child, what Elizabeth got.
Safety and a belief by most that she is a moral and caring person.
Keep a close rein on your children. They are young and clever.
Just take a look at the 9 year old, who hitched a ride to Vegas and practically no one on board the airliner noticed.
Thought I would lighten up a little today. So much politics and garbage about health care….it’s time to switch gears.
There is an article that describes what other countries feel about our food.
I concur that Velveeta is not one of my favorites, either. Pop tarts, beef jerky, snow cones.
Yeah. I can do without those.
But they don’t like our MEATLOAF? Our CASSEROLES? Our BACON.
You don’t like meat loaf. You aint no friend of mine.
You don’t like our bacon? Try the bacon in Italy.
You don’t like our Hersheys? I admit Belgian chocolate is good…and dark…and good…and dark.
But meat loaf? Say it aint so. Annette’s meat loaf is a staple at our house. My mom’s was great too.
Meat loaf and ketchup and potatoes. Hey man…that’s He man.
Casseroles? Love em. Pork chop casserole, cheese potato casserole, come on …man.
European bread is hard and tasteless. Their bacon? Scrawny.
Oh, by the way. Their hotel beds are lumpy.
So the “Brainiacs” that run the Los Angeles schools came up with a splendid idea.
Give every student a 700.00 I pad to help them “Get smart”. Guess what? They did.
They hacked into the schools website in a matter of seconds and now use the pads for music.
And of course, video games.
And of course, to tweet.
The school board gets an “S” in stupidity.
How much common sense is required to figure out how kids are going to react with a free I pad.
Now the school board folks want to redeem the I pads from the students until they figure out a better way.
Guess what again? The tools are lost. Cant find em. Gone.
(You know…..like my dog ate my homework).
What this country needs for their next president is a CPA.
Someone that looks at the books, not cooks the books.
How much insanity must be used until common sense prevails?
Every day we throw money at problems and the problems expands.
The problem is here ….and we are it.
